Easy Baked Ziti

Post image for Easy Baked Ziti

This was one of the first things I learned to make, and it’s definitely a crowd pleaser. It’s really simple to make and is very kid friendly. Make sure you serve this with some kind of vegetable, though, because it’s loaded with carbs and cheese (so it’s impossible not to love). I made this with ground turkey and low-fat sour cream to make it a bit lighter, but you can use whatever you like. Recipe after the jump!

All you need.

Cook your pasta according to the package directions, drain, and set aside.

Brown your meat and onions in a medium sized pot.

When ready, add your sauce to the meat and onions and simmer for about 15 minutes.

Grate your mozzarella while your sauce simmers (you can also use sliced mozzarella for this, if you want).

When your sauce is ready, pour half of your pasta into the bottom of a greased or lined pan.

Add your provolone (I only had a little bit of provolone, so I used that and extra mozzarella together).

Measure out your sour cream.

And spread that over your noodles and cheese.

Then top that with half of your sauce.

Add your noodles and cheese again.

Then top that with the rest of your sauce and some Parmesan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Allow to set for a few minutes before cutting.

adapted from All Recipes

1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 pound ground turkey
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce, dealer’s choice
6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
1 1/2 cups low-fat sour cream
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain and set aside.
2. In a large skillet, brown the onion and ground turkey over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce, and simmer 15 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and/or line a 9×13 inch baking dish. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, Provolone cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
4. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheeses are melted. Let sit for a few minutes before serving.

Hmmmm, I make Baked Ziti all the time but not with many of the ingredients you’ve used (other than the obvious). I’ve never used a recipe just winged it. Your recipe looks interesting. I like how you layered the ziti. I usually just throw it all in a bowl and mix it up then into the dish.
I’m gonna give it a try…….THX!

This looks delicious! Baked ziti is one of those American-Italian dishes that hasn’t made its way to Australia in a big way, but I’ll gave to give it a shot.

That looks yummy! I love pasta especially if there’s cheese in it. I will have to give this a try.

Mm, never made it with sour cream before! I’ll have to try that!

That looks amazing! I’d really recommend using penne rigate, though, because it has ridges that hold the sauce/meat in the noodle really well.

Never thought of using sour cream in a baked ziti… looks good though! And easy! I’ll have to give this one a try this week.

This is a keeper and I love that you used Turkey as well – I could sneak that in for a healthy alternative and my stepson would never know!!! YUM

You re killing me. Baked ziti is a favorite of mine. If you like baked ziti try the Barefoot Contessa’s Penne with 5 Cheeses. Over the top good.

Never heard of sour cream in baked ziti… My Italian grandfather is turning in his grave! Try ricotta next time :)

Vanessa – Maybe you should try sour cream next time. :)

I would have never thought to add sour cream, what a great idea. I bet you could add creme fraiche too for even more creamy cheesy goodness!

I made this last night and we had it for leftovers tonight and we probably still have enough for tomorrow and wednesday! I don’t mind though because it was soooo good. I’m making the chicken pot pie soup tomorrow, can’t wait to see how it tastes!

Hey, there! I made this over the weekend but with a few changes. I used chicken chunks. I didn’t layer it (lazy), I used some cream cheese, (sour cream was iffy, so I tossed it) and I put in some spinach. It was good. I still intend to try it your way!

Heyy!
So i think you’re great,
really all your recipes seem fantastic. Any way I need some advice. Christmas is coming up, and my three best friends and I we’re hoping to cook up a feast. I figured they’d enjoy baked ziti, the only problem is that one of them is allergic to tomatoes, so I want to know if there is any other sauce that doesnt involve tomatos i could possibly use??
p.s. I don’t like the white sauce either, do you think there’s anything?
THANKSS!

I made this last night and it was so good. Most of the pan was left over but it’s all gone now because I couldn’t quit eating it today. Great recipe!

i made this for a party tonight and it was a big hit! IT MADE MUCH THOUGH.

alex December 19, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I made this a month ago for my family and boyfriend, it was an instant hit! I used shell pasta instead of ziti and it held the sauce really nicely.
My boyfriend loved it so much he requested that we make it for his birthday, and I’m making it again tonight!
Thank you!

For how many people do you think will feed this recipe?

thecrepesofwrath February 5, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Gg: It’s made in a 9×13 pan, so probably 6-8 people.
