Sweet Soy Glazed Chicken and Onions

I can’t remember where I found the recipe, but it is fantastic and so simple! The entire dish comes together in 45 minutes or less and everybody will be happy with their dinner! The chicken is tossed in a lightly sweet sauce of soy sauce, cider vinegar, sugar, garlic, and ginger and cooked together with onions that caramelize with the sugar and heat. This chicken tastes a lot more complicated than it is! Kramer thought it was absolutely delicious, and clean up was a cinch because there were only two cooking vessels involved – what more could a girl want?

Your ingredients.

Slice your chicken into bite-sized pieces and thinly slice your onions. Place in a greased and/or lined 9×13 baking pan and set aside.

In a medium sauce pan, whisk together the cornstarch and water together until completely smooth.

Add in the soy sauce, sugar, cider vinegar, garlic powder, ground ginger, and black pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 8 minutes.

Pour the sauce over the chicken and onions. Bake at 425 degrees F for 25-30 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through completely.

Serve with rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables and enjoy!

Print this recipe

2 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
1/2 an onion, sliced thinly
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line and/or grease a 9×13 baking pan and add the cut-up chicken and sliced onions. Set aside.

2. In a medium sauce pan, whisk together the cornstarch and water until completely smooth. Add in the rest of the ingredients and whisk until combined, bring to a simmer, and allow to cook until thickened, about 8 minutes. Make sure you keep stirring everything so it doesn’t burn while it cooks.

3. Pour the sauce over the chicken and stir to make sure everything is well coated. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until everything is cooked through. Serve over rice, with noodles, or with steam veggies. Serves 2-3.

Cassie November 23, 2009 at 2:47 am

This looks really delicious but I’m afraid I can’t find the amounts listed anywhere.

Angela November 23, 2009 at 5:59 am

I would really like to make this. Are there supposed to be measurements? or is this just to taste? Sorry, I’m a bit confused.

Kaleena Harrington November 23, 2009 at 6:28 am

No ingredients list? I would love to make this and I could probably figure it out, but do you have the amounts of what you used for the sauce?

ingrid November 23, 2009 at 8:46 am

Nope, not much more to want! Quick, easy, everyone loves it, and minimal clean up! Yup, sounds like a winner!

Speaking of winners… I made your orange chicken. We really enjoyed it though it was quite spicy. I was okay with it but I should have cut back on the red pepper flakes for the kids. They like spicy but they love to soak their rice in sauce which in this case was too spicy. :) I’ll definitely be making it again.

I’ve tried many of your recipes. This looks GREAT! I can’t wait to try this and your orange chicken recipe. Can you believe I’d never had it until last week? For some reason, I was scared to give it a try when eating out… I found a new love! It was delicious. I can’t wait to try it at home!

Kaleena: Yeah, I made the post at like, midnight last night so I was a little out of it! hahah.

Steph: Thanks! And you’re not alone. Before I starting dating Kramer, he refused to even eat Chinese food! Now he loves it.

Ingrid: I think that living in Phoenix has made me have a higher tolerance for spicy foods, haha, so I’m always adding some extra head. I’m glad you liked it, though!

Made this last night, and it was very tasty! For personal preference, I’ll probably reduce the soy a bit next time, and probably add a bit more ginger.

This website is seriously becoming the number one place I get new recipes — this is another winner! I and my husband enjoyed it a lot, and the leftovers were still quite tasty the next day for lunch.

Made this recipe tonight and it was great I can’t begin to tell you! My family LOVED it and I have yet another “keeper” recipe from you! Thanks!

Just made this and it turned out AMAZING!!! Better than eating at a restaurant…and so simple to make! Congrats on your wedding. :)

Hey! I’ve posted to you on your LJ posts so you might (or might not) recognize the name but anyways, how important is the ground ginger because in my household we have triplicates of just about every spice but no ground ginger or is there something I could subsitute?

DJ Rocca February 2, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Ok just to let you know I made this twice and my sauce never came out as light as yours. I made it twice and it came out the same time. Luckily its just for me and I love strong flavors but its over powering according to my Mother. Could the ratios be off?

Kate February 21, 2010 at 6:37 pm

My husband and I had invited my parents over for dinner this evening and this morning I’d decided to give this recipe a try. Delicious! I doubled the recipe and it worked great. And everyone went back for seconds! Always a good sign. Thanks for yet another delicious recipe – I’ve made many that you’ve posted and they always turn out so well.
