The Oscars are this weekend! I am so excited. I’m not particularly in love with any of the movies that are nominated, but I love Billy Crystal and I always have fun watching the show. I suppose that if I have to pick who I wanted to win, I would chose Moneyball or Midnight in Paris for Best Picture, Brad Pitt for Best Actor (he carried that movie, and as much as I want to see Gary Oldman win, I think that Pitt really deserves it for this role), and Rooney Mara or Glenn Close for Best Actress (how do you pick – they were both great performances). One of our favorite theaters, The Nitehawk in Williamsburg, is playing all of the live action, documentary, and animated shorts this weekend, so we may go see those, too. Who will you be rooting for this weekend? I admit, I haven’t seen The Artist yet, and I keep saying that I think it’s dumb, but I may break down and go see it because every time I say that I think I’ll hate something, I end up loving it; isn’t that always the case? I will say that I am really disappointed that Take Shelter wasn’t nominated for anything – if you get a chance to see it, please do. I think it was my favorite movie of 2011.
Well, either way, in honor of the Oscars, I wanted to share a fun, fancy cocktail with you for the weekend ahead. Recently, our liquor cabinet has increase quite a bit. No, we didn’t go on an alcoholic shopping spree; our neighbors knocked on our door a few weeks ago, told us that they were moving to Texas quite suddenly, and wanted to know if we wanted their liquor collection. Is the Pope Catholic? Of course! Obviously, we accepted. One of the bottles that they so generously gave to us was this Domaine De Canton, which is a French ginger liqueur, and I have to say, is really delicious. It’s not something that I would ever have thought to buy, but we are already out of it and I plan to buy more, soon. I found this recipe on the Domaine De Canton website, as I had never used it before and wanted to try it as it was meant to be enjoyed. It’s a lot like St. Germain (which I have made many a cocktail with in the past, like The Brooklyn Beauty or the Summer Key Lime Cooler), one of my other favorite French liqueurs, but it’s much less sweet, much more subtle, and has a light ginger flavor that pairs well with just about anything. Indulge in a bottle for this weekend – you won’t regret it.
- 5 ounces vodka
- 4 ounces Domaine de Canton (or another ginger liqueur)
- 1 ounce Grand Marnier
- clementine or orange peel, for garnish
- thin piece of ginger, for garnish (optional, but it adds a great aroma)
- Add the Domaine de Canton, vodka, and Grand Marnier to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake for 20 seconds, then pour into two martini glasses and garnish with fresh ginger and/or an orange peel.
