I know it’s a bit late, but I really did have a fantastic weekend. Fashion’s Night Out ended up being better than expected…which it always is, but still! I went out with Kramer’s sister Rachel, and we got all kinds of goodies. Free beers, pretzels, candy, gin and tonics, and, of course, plenty of champagne and prosecco to go around. After FNO, we hit up a few bars and called it a night early enough for Kramer and I to hang out for a bit after his class. I’m not sure if I mentioned it, because I didn’t want to embarrass him, but he got into NYU for his master’s degree! I am so thrilled and excited for him. He has always done well in school (enjoyed it, even), so I’m beyond happy that he gets to go to such a great school to pursue a degree in higher education. I know that he is gonna kick ass and take names – that’s what graduate school is all about, right? That’s what I thought. When we first found out that he got in, it was early on a Saturday morning. I woke up to do a Jillian Michaels video in the living room (do not judge me, people) and Kramer was on his computer in our room. He walked out with his tablet to show me something, and I, of course, completely focused and dedicated to my 25-minute workout, told him to buzz off and tell me after I was done. He insisted, and I think my response was something along the lines of “OMG KRAMER I AM BUSY!” and he kept pushing the tablet toward me, so I huffed and puffed and paused the DVD, only to realize that he had gotten into the only grad school he applied to. I immediately apologized and hugged him and jumped with joy. Now, though, he’s gone two nights a week…so I have lots of time to work on this site, go to the gym, and of course, watch (and rewatch) my favorite movies. Last night was 3:10 to Yuma, which also happens to be one of my favorite short stories by Elmore Leonard. Either way, CONGRATULATIONS, KRAMER! I love you, bby. The first person that this sandwich is for is for him, because there’s nothing Kramer loves more than a runny egg.

So, there’s Kramer, but there’s also my dad. My dad probably instilled in me my great love for food. He’s always pouring over ingredients at the grocery store, grilling something, or talking about how delicious some meal was. My dad is a runner and is pretty health conscious, but he will still dig into a steak or ribs if it’s a special occasion (or they are on the table…one or the other). My dad is a fabulous cook, too – he’ll slice garlic impossibly thin, just like in Goodfellas, and will spend hours preparing one dish because it needs to be absolutely perfect. That’s why when I saw this Taylor ham, I knew I had to buy it and make a sandwich to dedicate to my dad. He is a Jersey boy, born and bred, and while I was only born there, I still have some Jersey blood in me, too. This is an all encompassing Jersey sandwich: pork roll (brand name Taylor ham, if you will), cheese, and a fried egg all on a hard roll (or a bagel). My father prefers to garnish his with SPK (salt, pepper, ketchup), but I just sprinkled on freshly ground pepper on mine…and maybe a bit of Sriracha, or as I like to call it, The New Ketchup (’cause it is, guys). My dad is headed back to China tomorrow for another business trip, but I hope that he sees this and can taste a little bit of home through the photos.

Jersey Breakfast

Serves: 1 sandwich
 

Taylor ham, cheddar cheese, and a fried egg on a hard roll.
Ingredients
  • 2 thick slices Taylor ham, sliced at 4 sides (for even cooking)
  • 2 slices cheddar (or American, if you want to get traditional) cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 hard roll

Instructions
  1. Get out a very large pan so you can do this in one go, if you have it. Otherwise, I recommend 2 pans.
  2. Slice the ham at 4 sides to be sure that it cooks evenly and doesn’t roll up. Fry it on both sides for 1 minute or so over medium-high heat and set aside. In the same pan, toast the cut sides of your roll, then top with cheese and place a lid on the pan so the cheese steams and melts. Place the ham on top and set aside, covered, if possible, to stay warm.
  3. While you do that, fry your egg over medium-high heat, until the whites are cooked but the yolk is still runny. You can flip it for an over-easy egg, if you like. Top the cheese and ham with the egg, place the other side of the roll on top of that, slice, and serve. Have napkins at the ready!

  4. Too funny, we did our “ode to Taylor Ham” post a few weeks ago. Such a good sandwich! I wish food blogs could let readers “taste” the posts, because Taylor Ham is so delish and only available to those of us lucky enough to live in the tri-state area (seriously, such good food around here, chinese, pizza, bagels, sandwiches!)

    In any event, big congrats to Kramer! What is Kramer getting his Masters in? I wrapped up my MBA Christmas before last after 2 years of night classes. So rewarding on a personal level, regardless of where you end up as a result of it.

  8. That sandwich brings me back to my fast food days, but it looks (and probably tastes) so much better. I’m pretty health conscious and a total exercise nut, but life is too short to not eat yummy food sometimes. And glad to hear you enjoyed FNO! I just posted about it on my blog too since I forgot to put a memory card in my camera and had to figure out how to get them out of it. Good times ;)

    Runny egg breakfast sandwiches are a favorite in this house! We had those this morning, but I added sliced avocado because it needed to be used…and of course added “new ketchup” to the sandwich. :) Mmmm! I love your recipes, many of them have become staples in our house, thank you!!!

    I lived in Jersey for 23 years and the first time I realized you could buy pork roll at Publix in Orlando (where I relocated to) I literally screamed in the middle of the store. Whatever y’all, a girl needs to cope with hungover Saturday mornings somehow!

    Just found taylor ham in a grocery store in Alexandria, VA, how exciting! Taylor ham is one of the many things that makes New Jersey great, born and raised!
